ADOS-2 Assessment

If you have concerns regarding a child’s Social Communication Development, an ADOS 2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule) assessment can prove very useful as a next step in information gathering.

This can take place in a quiet area at Pre-School at a time suitable for both staff and parents or if this is not possible I am able to assess children in my own home office space. Parents are always encouraged to be present for the observation unless it is felt that this would impact on the results in anyway.

I am able to offer an ADOS-2 assessment and written report within a given timescale, as part of a package including a prior home visit and follow up visit - either at home or Pre-School/School.

As I work independently I am able to offer a 3/4 week turn around with written reports once I have seen your child for an ADOS-2 assessment.

The ADOS-2 is an observational schedule designed to measure behavioural response, communication and communicative intent in relation to the triad of features characteristic of ASDs.

There are 5 ADOS modules, including the new toddler module. I am qualified to administer this new module which can assess children from 12-30 months during play based observations an information gathering. Module One is for children who are pre-verbal/using single words for individuals 31months or older. Module Two is for all ages with phrased speech and younger children with fluent speech. Modules Three and Four are for older children, adolescents and adults. The ADOS-2 schedule is designed to provide a basis for diagnosis of classic presentations of childhood autism and of atypical autism. It also provides a framework for the collection of information relating to more broadly defined autism spectrum

The ADOS-2 schedule focuses on the ASD triad of:

  • communication
  • reciprocal social interaction and
  • imagination, creativity, stereotyped behaviours and restricted interest

It should be noted that the ADOS alone is not able to ‘diagnose’ ASD, neither am I able to do so as a Specialist Teacher, but I am very experienced in this field and this assessment gives a comprehensive evaluation of the likelihood that the child or adult completing the assessment has difficulties that fall in line with a ‘classic’ ASD diagnosis, or not. This should then be used as part of further multi-disciplinary assessment and decision making by a Paediatrician, Psychiatrist or Psychologist.

Specialist Teacher Visits

I am TEACCH trained and with permission from parents/carers I can visit your Pre-School or Nursery to offer support, advice and practical strategies that staff can implement to enhance practice. I can work with and alongside other essential professionals already involved in specific cases to ensure a joined up approach to support which is crucial to aid development. I am able to leave a comprehensive Record of Visit with you on the day of my visit but can also gather information to create an Initial Assessment report or a more in depth Specialist Teacher report which can be used for transition and as evidence towards applications for EHC (Education Health Care) Plans. I am also able to support meetings with parents and help with the set up and implementation of IEP’s (Individual Education Plans) or Learning Plans; wider planning and training.

Help with EHC (Education Health Care) Plan

Following observations of a child at Pre-School I can compile a comprehensive specialist teacher report with educational recommendations, which could be used as evidence towards an EHC Plan request/assessment by the Local Authority. Although I cannot guarantee outcomes, a report of this type alongside other professional’s findings, can offer independent clarity to help ascertain a child’s primary area of need and assist in helping the authority to make appropriate educational recommendations.

I have a wealth of recent Early Years experience and am able to offer a variety of training packages which may benefit your staff (and parents). I deliver an ‘Autism Friendly Pre-Schools’ package of support and also a basic ‘Autism Awareness’ package which have both proved very popular. These can be at a length to suit you and your team and delivered out of hours to help with the organisation of staffing. Please contact me for further details.
